Protecting your privacy is of utmost importance to us. Furthermore, we want to ensure that you always know when we store data and how we use it.

The following information provides details about where we collect information from you during your visit to our website and how we handle it.

The use of the Bundeskunsthalle’s website is generally possible without providing any personal data. If the processing of personal data is necessary and there is no legal basis for such processing, we will generally obtain the consent of the individual concerned.

Purposes and Scope of Data Processing When Visiting the Website

Contact via Email

If you contact us via email, we will use your personal data (name, email address, message text) solely to communicate with you. The processing is based on Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR. We use your email address exclusively to process your inquiry. Your data will be deleted as soon as it is no longer required for the purpose for which it was collected. This is usually the case when it can be inferred from the circumstances that the matter in question has been fully resolved.

Matomo for Web Analysis (formerly Piwik)

We have integrated the Matomo component on the Bundeskunsthalle’s website. Matomo is an open-source software tool for web analysis. Web analysis involves the collection, gathering, and evaluation of data regarding the behavior of visitors to websites. A web analysis tool captures, among other things, data about which website a visitor came from (the so-called referrer), which subpages of the website were accessed, how often they were accessed, and for how long they were viewed. Web analysis is primarily used to optimize a website and to conduct cost-benefit analyses of online advertising.

The software is operated on the server of the data controller, and the log files, which are sensitive in terms of data protection, are stored exclusively on this server.

The purpose of the Matomo component is to analyze visitor traffic on our website. We use the collected data and information to evaluate the use of the website and to compile online reports that illustrate activities on our web pages.

Matomo places a cookie on the user’s information technology system. The concept of cookies has already been explained above. By setting the cookie, we are enabled to analyze the usage of our website. Each time a page of our website is accessed, the Matomo component automatically prompts the user’s internet browser to transmit data to our server for the purpose of online analysis. Through this technical process, we gain knowledge of personal data, such as the user’s IP address, which helps us, among other things, to track the origin of visitors and clicks.

The cookie stores personal information, such as the time of access, the location from which the access originated, and the frequency of visits to our website. Each time our website is visited, this personal data, including the IP address of the internet connection used by the individual, is transmitted to our server. This personal data is stored by us. We do not share this personal data with third parties.

The individual can prevent the placement of cookies by our website at any time, as explained above, by adjusting the settings of their internet browser accordingly, thereby permanently objecting to the placement of cookies. Such a setting in the internet browser would also prevent Matomo from placing a cookie on the individual’s information technology system. Additionally, any cookie already set by Matomo can be deleted at any time via an internet browser or other software programs.

Furthermore, the individual has the option to object to and prevent the collection of data generated by Matomo related to the use of this website. For this purpose, the individual must set an opt-out cookie. If the individual’s information technology system is later deleted, formatted, or reinstalled, the individual must set the opt-out cookie again.

However, by setting the opt-out cookie, there is a possibility that the websites of the data controller may no longer be fully usable for the individual.

Further information and Matomo’s applicable privacy policy can be accessed at matomo.org/privacy/.
